Cummings, Thomas and James : Thomas Cummings (ca.1758-1823), a non-commissioned officer in Butler's Rangers, obtained a land allotment near Chippawa Creek in 1783 when the regiment was disbanded. He became a justice of the peace and township clerk. As Commissioner of Roads and Highways in 1810, he supervised expenditures for road repairs. Thomas Cummings was also a merchant with a store located on the portage road on the Canadian side of the Niagara River. Much of his merchandise for local consumption was purchased through Auldjo, Maitland and Co. of Montreal, who also disposed of his consignments of flour and potash.

By 1801, James Cummings (1789-1878) had begun to manage aspects of his father's business. He set up his own business as well, dealing with Auldjo, Maitland and Co. and J. Walton and Co. He obtainted a government contract to supply troops stationed in Upper Canada with provisions through John McGill, a government purchasing agent. In 1811, James succeeded his father as Clerk of the Township of Willoughby.

With the onset of the War of 1812, James Cummings was appointed a lieutenant, and his father Thomas Cummings, a major, of the 3rd Regiment of Lincoln Militia. By the time of the Rebellion of 1837, James Cummings was Deputy Quarter Master General to the Militia assembled by Col. Allan MacNab for the defence of the frontier. Cummings sent information on suspected rebels to authorities at York. He eventually became a member of Parliament of the United Province of Canada.
