Fonds consists of papers which depict the transition of a hospital and its programme from that of a small unapproved health care facility to a nationally recognized hospital whose programmes of patient care, teaching, and research are recognized by all the relevant government and accrediting bodies. They provide insight into interrelationships with the government, community and the various professions particularly medicine, dentistry, nursing and allied health groups. Examples are also provided of coordination and cooperation among hospitals as well as the effect of universal health insurance on utilization of facilities and services, n.d., 1932, 1941-1986.

The fonds also contains photographs of ground-breaking ceremonies and construction of Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto; and a photograph of Dr. Louis Siminovitch, Director of Mount Sinai Research Institute, [ca. 1948-1965].

Liswood, Sidney, 1916-1998 : Sidney Liswood was born and educated in New York. He received his M.B.A. from the University of Chicago, School of Business (Hospital Administration) in 1942 and his M.P.H. from Harvard University, School of Public Health in 1952.

He was a captain in the United States Army, Medical Administrative Corps, 1942-1946, and served overseas for two and a half years. He was decorated with the Bronze Star. After the War, he served as administrator of Beth Israel Hospital in Boston.

Sidney Liswood came to Canada in 1954 to serve as chief executive officer of Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, one of two major primary care hospitals in Canada under Jewish community auspices. He retired from that position in 1976 but continues to serve as executive consultant to the Board of Directors. He served as president of Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation 1976-1986 and of Mount Sinai Institute during the same period.

He was a professor of health administration at the University of Toronto, 1955-1981. He was appointed professor emeritus in 1981. He was responsible for Mount Sinai Hospital becoming a teaching hospital accredited to the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine in 1962. He played an active role in the Ontario Hospital Association and served as chairman of its executive committee. In 1975 he was the recipient of the Civic Award of Merit from the City of Toronto.
