Bytown and Prescott Railroad Company : 1 July 1848 a committee met at the Bytown court house to organize a fundraising campaign to subsidize the survey and incorporation of the Bytown and Prescott Railroad. The Bytown & Prescott (B&P) Railway Company was incorporated 10 August 1850. The official sod turning ceremony was held in Ottawa 9 October 1851. Scheduled service between Bytown and Prescott started 29 December 1854. In May 1855 the railway was renamed the Ottawa & Prescott (O&P) Railway to reflect the fact that the city of Bytown had been renamed Ottawa. In 1857 the O&P was placed into receivership. The railway was sold at public auction in 1865 and sat idle for 2 years. In December 1867 the O&P was reorganized as the St Lawrence & Ottawa (StL&O) Railway. The StL&O was leased to the CPR for 999 years 26 September 1884. Between 1908 and 1910, the CPR rebuilt the Prescott yards to handle increased traffic related to the import of coal supplies from the United States. Passenger service was discontinued in 1957 and the line was dismantled in 1995.
