Fonds consists of letters from J. Morris to W.H. Griffin, 1848; and a letter from F.V. Griffin, 1851, with a draft reply.

The fonds also consists of a three page illuminated testamonial/address presented to W.H. Griffin on the occasion of his retirement in 1888. The testamonial bears a total of 243 signatures from Post Office Department employees comprising staff from the Montreal Post Office, the Railway Mail Service and the Post Office Inspection Branch. The testamonial is illustrated by E. Cox and Co., Montreal.

Griffin, William Henry, 1812-1900 : William Henry Griffin was born 7 August 1812 in London and spent his entire career with the post office beginning as a clerk on 24 April 1831 shortly after he arrived in the Canadas. He retired on 30 June 1888 and spent the last twenty years of his service as deputy postmaster general.

When he entered the post office, it was directed from Whitehall as part of the imperial civil service. In 1833 he became postmaster of Quebec City and from 1 May 1835, he served as post office surveyor, or inspector, for the area between Kingston and Fredericton. By 1838, he had also become clerk to Deputy Postmaster General Stayner. On 6 April 1851, he assumed the position of secretary of the post office in the Province of Canada when the department was transferred to the British North American colonies that month. The postal service in Canada progressed quickly from that point including taking steps to improve the postal service to the Red River and to the Atlantic colonies. Griffin assumed the position of deputy postmaster general on 12 June 1857 as part of the reorganization of the Post Office.
