Also included is the directors' report, 1826.Provenance :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Welland Canal : The first Welland Canal was constructed in 1824-1829 by a private company, incorporated in 1824 and 1825, of which George Keefer (1773-1858) was the President. It crossed the Niagara Peninsula of what is now south west Ontario from Port Weller on Lake Ontario to Port Colborne on Lake Erie, overcoming a height difference of 99.4 m. between the lakes and bypassing the turbulent Niagara River and Niagara Falls. It created and expanded communities along its length and was a primary factor in their urban form and industrial development, for prior to its construction all freight had to be transported overland from Queenston to Chippawa Creek (Welland).
In 1841, the Province of Canada purchased the Welland Canal from its private holders. A series of major new construction works were undertaken at various times, often on different routes, and in 1959, the modern or fourth canal became part of the St. Lawrence Seaway. A bypass at Welland was opened in 1973.Information additionnelle :Note générale :Documents accumulated by George Keefer which were received by the National Archives of Canada at some time prior to 1908 and originally inventoried as Volume 180 of the obsolete "M" Series.Groupes de documents reliés :Researchers should note that the principle records of the Welland Canal, 1824-1959, are to be found in RG 43.Vedette-matière :Source :PrivéAncien no de référence archivistique :MG24-E3 -
