Fonds consists of May Jackman's account, written for her grandchildren, n.d., of her childhood at Moose Factory, as well as an account of her early married life, "Farming in Saskatchewan Forty Years Ago," [ca. 1962], together with a newspaper clipping telling the story of her life at the time of her death in 1982, and a rough genealogical chart of her family. Also included are three expanded versions of May Jackman's reminiscences, n.d., written by May Jackman's daughter, Letitia Jackman Wallace Fraser: "Letitia Henderson Newnham and Moosonee," "Prince Albert - 1904", and "Saskatchewan - 1922."

The small collection provides an unusual child's-eye view of late nineteenth century conditions at the Anglican mission at Moose Factory, the Hudson's Bay Company Fort on James Bay, which gives sidelights on relations between the missionaries and the H.B.C. and between the H.B.C. and their rivals, "them revelling friars" (Revillon frères), as well as on communications, medical care, education, and Indian domestic servants. Also of interest are the personal reminiscences of Bishop Newnham and his wife, and of immigrants and farming in the Prince Albert area, Saskatchewan, in the first quarter of the twentieth century. Jackman, May Louise, 1894-1982 : May Louise Jackman (1894-1982), teacher and housewife, was the second of five daughters of the Right Reverend Jervois Arthus Newnham (1852-1941), second Anglican Bishop of Moosonee, 1893-1903, and third Bishop of Saskatchewan, 1903-1921. She entered McGill University in 1913, and graduated in 1917, a Gold Medalist in Modern Languages. During the next two years, she taught German at the University of Saskatchewan, then spent a year in Paris on a scholarship, teaching English at the College Sévigny and taking classes at the Sorbonne, before taking her Master's degree at McGill in 1921. In 1922, she married Noel Jackman (ca. 1886-1947), an English immigrant homesteading near Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.

After being crippled by an infection which killed her baby son, she moved with her family to Hamilton, Ontario, in 1928, in order to have easier access to the medical facilities she needed. There she tutored in French and German and, after her husband's death in 1947, taught at McMaster University for several years. She died on 3 January 1982.

Note générale :

May Jackman's account of her childhood at Moose Factory was presented in 1984 by Mrs. W.M. Fry of Bridgewater, Somerset, through the courtesy of Elizabeth O'Kiely of West Vancouver, British Columbia. The rest of the material in the collection was presented in the same year by May Jackman's daughter, Letitia Fraser of Waterdown, Ontario, through the kind offices of her son, Kenneth A. Wallace of Ottawa.
