Fonds consists of: minutes of Congregation Shearith Israel, 1885-1910, microfilm reel M-3789; minute book, 1778-1780, microfilm reel M-4601; congregation bulletins, 1940-1945; Prothonorary's registers, 1832-1886; one issue of the Jewish Chronicle, 1848; correspondence and miscellaneous documents, 1797-1946; and correspondence, lectures and programmes of Rev. Abraham de Sola, 1849-1871, and Rev. Meldola de Sola, 1860-1907, microfilm reel M-3786. Also included in the fonds are by-laws, registers of births, marriages and deaths; records of annual general meetings; correspondence of the Hart family; and other records. One Sephardi Sefer Torah of the late 17th or early 18th century possibly written in North Africa, volume 8.

Shearith Israel of Montreal. Spanish and Portuguese Congregation : Nine years after the British conquest of New France, a small group of Jewish settlers from England, the American colonies, and Germany established the first Jewish congregation in Canada (est. 1768), the second oldest in North America. From the beginning the congregation adopted the Sephardic customs and rites. The congregation met for worship in rented premises on St. James Street until the first synagogue was built in 1779, on Notre Dame Street. In 1824 the building was demolished and the congregation was without a home until a new synagogue was built in 1838. In 1890 the congregation moved again to Stanley Street and in 1947 it moved to its present location on Lemieux and St. Kevin.

The first flow of Sephardic Jews to Montreal who fled the Arab countries after the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, joined Shearith Israel. The Congregation's present membership comprises 750 families over half of whom belong to the Iraqi, Lebanese, Egyptian and Morrocan Jewish communities of Montreal. The congregation passed its first-by-laws in 1778. In 1846 and 1890 it received provincial charters for religious institutions.

Several outstanding Rabbis have served the Spanish and Portuguese Jewish Congregation including Rev. David Piza, 1840-1846, Rev. Abraham de Sola, 1846-1882, and Rev. Meldola de Sola, 1882-1918 and Dr. Solomon Frank, 1947-1970 Rabbi Frank served as Rabbi Emeritus from 1970 until his death in 1982.

Note générale :

The original papers were deposited by Shearith Israel, the Spanish and Portuguese Congregation, Montreal in 1979. One publication was presented in 1988 by Joseph Handman and Anwar Shahin. Microfilm was received in 1976 from the Jewish Public Library, Montreal. Microfilm copies H-985 to H-987 of volumes 1 to 7 were prepared in 1981.

Volumes 1 to 7 are available on microfilm, reels H-985 to H-987. However, researchers should note that what was formerly volume 3A is now volume 7., A digital copy of a page of the Torah is available.
