Also included are photographs documenting the careers of Milton Montgomery and Donald Montgomery with the United Steelworkers of America, as well as some family activities, 1920-1975.
The fonds also includes oral history interviews by Donald Montgomery of John Bruce, Joseph Dwan, Max Federman, William Jenoves, Harry Simon and other trade unionists (1963-1969, 1985-1986).Provenance :Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Montgomery, Donald R., 1920- : Donald Montgomery was born on 8 June 1920 in Canora, Saskatchewan. Donald's father, Milton Montgomery, was an active trade unionist in the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel and Tin Workers, and later in the Steel Workers Organizing Committee (SWOC) eventually becoming a full time staff member in 1936 for the Hamilton area.
Donald Montgomery became a SWOC staff member in 1940. From 1943, he was responsible for a variety of organization campaigns in Eastern Ontario, and in 1953 was transferred to Toronto and soon became Steelworkers area supervisor for the Toronto-Barrie area. In 1953, Montgomery also became secretary-treasurer of the Toronto and Lakeshore Labour Council and was re-elected to the same position on the merged Labour Council of Metropolitan Toronto until 1964.
Montgomery was elected in 1974 as secretary-treasurer of the Canadian Labour Congress in Ottawa, and in that capacity served as the CLC representative on the Canadian-American Committee, the British North American Committee, the Economic Policy Committee, and was the officer responsible for the CLC Department of Organization and its Chartered Bodies.
