Fonds documents the personal lives and business activities of three generations of the Shepherd family. Included are numerous records relating to the family business, the Ottawa River Navigation Company and the family interest in steamers and steam navigation. There are extensive records documenting their involvement in the First World War, as well as records pertaining to the family farm in Como Quebec, and the Delesderniers family, who were related to the Shepherd's by marriage. Included in the correspondence is a postcard.

Fonds also consists of photographs of various steamship vessels on the Ottawa, St. Lawrence and Great Lake waterways including those owned by the Ottawa River Navigation Company and the Tree Line Navigation Company; officers and crews of various vessels; views of Montreal, Iroquois, Hudson, Como, Oka and Chambly, Quebec; World War I in Europe; and the R-100 airship.

Fonds also consists of amateur footage shot in Canada, the United States and Central America by Robert Ward Shepherd III.

Shepherd, Robert Ward, 1819-1895 : Robert Ward Shepherd (1819-1895), a business and ship's captain was born in Norfolk England, immigrated to Canada in 1830 and settled in Montreal. Shepherd was associated with the steam navigation on the Ottawa-Montreal route, first as Captain of a number of steamers and from 1864 as President of the Ottawa River Navigation Company. He was also Vice-President and a Director of Molson's Bank. His son, Robert Ward Shepherd, Jr. (1848-1912) followed his father in the operation of the navigation company, and was proprietor of the Greenwood apple orchards at Como. The youngest of a family of six children, Robert Ward Shepherd III (1891-1962), followed the family interest in steamships. After serving in the First World War, first as an artillery gunner in the Canadian Expedition Force, then as as an officer in the Royal Navy, Shepherd returned to his work as a purser with Canada Steamship Lines. He married Kathleen Baker in 1921 and changed careers, becoming a purchasing agent for several steamship lines.

Note générale :

Photographs were acquired in 1949 from Robert Ward Shepherd and in 1974 from Mrs. Robert Ward Shepherd, both of Como, Quebec. Textual records and some photographs were acquired in 1978, 1980 and 2000 from Mrs. Margaret A. Peyton of Como, Quebec. A photocopy of biographical notes relating to Robert Ward Shepherd was acquired in 1962 from Mr. R.W. Shepherd III. This was formerly MG 24 I 36 and is now in volume one of this unit.
