Fonds consists of grangerized copies of The Canadian Portrait Gallery and The Last Forty Years: Canada Since the Union of 1841 kept by John Charles Dent. See microfilm, reels H-2336 to H-2340.

Fonds also consists of various graphic materials relating to Canadian history, including portraits, views of places, events and activities.

Dent, John Charles, 1841-1888 : John Charles Dent was born in Kendal, England and came to Canada ca. 1845. He was called to the bar of Upper Canada in 1865. In 1876 he edited the Toronto Evening Telegram and he joined the editorial staff of the Globe the next year. Subsequently, he devoted himself to the writing of history. In 1880 and 1881 he published The Canadian Portrait Gallery (4 volumes); in 1881 The Last Forty Years: Canada Since the Union of 1841 (2 volumes); and in 1885 The Story of the Upper Canadian Rebellion (2 volumes).

The majority of the fonds was transferred in 1967 and 1983 by the National Archives Library. Some of the graphic material was received in 1907.
