The fonds consists of letters to James G. Moylan from Sir John A. Macdonald, Thomas D'Arcy McGee, and Most Reverend Thomas J. Carr, and other miscellaneous papers relating to Moylan. The letters from Macdonald, 1863-1891, concern the political support of Irish Roman Catholics, financial assistance for the "Freeman", Irish immigration, and patronage. D'Arcy McGee's letters, 1857-1866, discuss political organization, the editorial policy of the "Freeman", Fenian activity, and the Orange Order. Thomas Carr's letter, 1883, refers to meeting Moylan in Ireland in 1872 and mutual acquaintances. The miscellaneous material comprises two newspaper clippings about the Moyhan papers, two letters from Sir Charles Tupper, and one letter from Sir Wilfrid Laurier.

Moylan, James George, 1826-1902 : James G. Moylan was born in Ireland and worked as a journalist in Washington, D.C. from 1851-1854. He was on the staff of the New York Daily Times from 1854 until 1856. In 1858, James Moylan became the first editor of the Freeman, an Irish Catholic newspaper published at Kingston, Canada West. From 1869 to 1872, he promoted emigration to Canada from Ireland on behalf on the Canadian government, and published articles on Canada in Irish journals. In 1872 he was appointed director of Penitentiaries, and then inspector. As such, he advocated prison reform and introduced improvements in the prison system.

The letters from Thomas D'Arcy McGee and Sir John A. Macdonald were acquired in 1928 from Miss A. Moylan and Mrs. W. E. Phillpotts of Ottawa, Ontario. The letter from Thomas Carr was acquired in 1929.
