Fonds consists of papers relating to Roy Dunlop's career in radio in Canada, China and elsewhere, including personal material; correspondence, including letters from Emily Carr, Nellie McClung, Lawren Harris, Gladstone Murray, Andrew Allan, Bernard Braden, John Grierson, Joseph Schull, Ira Dilworth, Norman A.M. MacKenzie, A.M. Nicholson, L.B. Pearson, Roy Thomson, Edna Jaques, and others, 1938-1974; manuscripts, C.B.C. scripts and other material relating to the writing of Dunlop's autobiographical work "Bits and Pieces", 1936-1963; and manuscripts relating to radio talks by Dunlop and a proposed book called "Chinese Cameos", 1946-1983.

Fonds also contains photographs of Roy Dunlop, taken while he was Controller of Programmes, Rediffusion (Hong Kong) Ltd., ca. 1960.

Dunlop, Roy Graham, 1908-1988 : Roy Dunlop was born in Indian Head, Saskatchewan, and educated at the University of Saskatchewan. He was programme director of the Moose Jaw radio station, CHAB, 1932-1937, before joining the C.B.C. in Vancouver, where he worked with Ira Dilworth and Andrew Allan, writing and producing for radio. His scripts were broadcast on the B.C. Department of Education School broadcasts, National School broadcasts and other C.B.C. programmes during the 1940's.

Dunlop had a lifelong interest in China and was a founder of the organization China-Canada Incorporated in Vancouver, as well as being a technical advisor for the Chinese Canadian Association. In 1946, he moved to China to work as Director of English Programs for the Central Broadcasting Administration. In 1949, he became Programme Director of Rediffusion (H.K.) Ltd. in Hong Kong and subsequently worked in radio in the West Indies, after a period with the British Foreign Office. He married Hellen Semmens in 1947.

Dunlop was awarded an M.B.E. in 1975 for his services to broadcasting in the Commonwealth. He retired to England in 1981 and published his autobiography, In All Directions, in 1986.

A copy of Roy Dunlop's autobiography, "In All Directions"(1986), is available in the National Archives Library. Textual records and some photographs acquired in 1987 from R.G. Dunlop of Cambridgeshire, England.
