Harris, Robert Inkerman, 1889-1966 : Robert Harris, orthopaedic surgeon, was born in Toronto 1889 and contracted tuberculosis at age thirteen. He was cured by stays in Montana and Northern Ontario. In 1910, he attended the University of Toronto to study medicine and graduated five years later at the top of his class. He then joined the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps, won the Military Cross twice, and in 1917 was invalided back to Canada. He joined the staff of the Sick Children Hospital (Toronto) and was in charge of veterans with tuberculosis unit at Toronto Hospital (Weston, Ont.). In 1930, he joined the staff of the University and Toronto General Hospital.

During World War II he re-enlisted in the RCAMC as a surgical consultant to the Director General of Medical Services and prepared his classic work The Canadian Army Foot Survey. After the war, Harris resumed his career as an orthopaedic surgeon at Toronto General Hospital and as a professor of surgery at University of Toronto. Harris was renowned for his work in both fields.

Harris was one of the founders of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (1929), and the founder of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association (1946). He also had a major role in the formation of the Exchange Travelling Fellowship Programme which promoted exchanges between American, British and Canadian orthopaedic associations. Harris won many honors and awards in Canada and abroad.
