The fonds also contains photographs depicting an Inuit family with a tupiq (tent made of skins), N.W.T. (now Nunavut), ca. 1903; an Inuit family aboard the Neptune, ca. 1904; and Albert Peter Low, 1903.Provenance :Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Low, A. P. (Albert Peter), 1861-1942 : Albert Peter Low, geologist and explorer, was first appointed to the Geological Survey in 1881. The Quebec-Labrador border was eventually defined on the basis of his 1893-1895 explorations. He resigned in 1901 to prospect for iron on Hudson Bay, but returned to government service to command the two expeditions, 1903, 1904, on the steamer Neptune.
He took formal possession of Southampton, Ellesmere, and adjacent islands for Canada. In 1906 he became Director of the Geological Survey of Canada. The next year, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Mines and he remained in that position until his retirement in 1913. His narrative account "Cruise of the Neptune" was published in the 1906 Report of the Minister of Marine and Fisheries.
