Fonds consists of correspondence, newspapers clippings and financial records, 1895-1934, which highlight Asher Pierce's activities in the wholesale fur business, philanthropic affairs in Montreal, and the development of Gan Chaim, Israel; an 11 page biography of Asher Pierce prepared by his son Sydney.

The fonds also contains photographs, 1895 to 1925, which depict Asher Pierce with family and friends.

Pierce, Asher, 1863-1936 : Asher Pierce, businessman and philanthropist, was born in Koltinan, Lithuania in 1863 and came to Canada in 1882. In 1888, he and his family moved to Oxbow, N.W.T. where they homesteaded and opened a general store which served the Jewish farm colonies at Hirsch and Oxbow. In 1890, Pierce returned to Montreal, forming A.& E. Pierce & Company, a leading wholesale fur business with offices in Mugdin, China and Harbin, Manchuria. In 1922, he sold the company to the Canadian Fur Auction Sales, which he also founded.

After his visit to Palestine in 1922, he set up a citrus cultivation company named Gan Chaim, raising capital from subscribers around the world. The first tree was planted in 1928 and ultimately comprised 1800 dunams. A small section of the groves bears his name, Tel Asher. Profits were contributed to the establishment of the Asher Pierce Fund, which is used to send an expert for educational purposes. An active philanthropist at home, he was one of the founders of the Jewish Orphans Home, one of the five who built the Mount Sinai Sanitorium, governor of several hospitals, and treasurer of the Baron de Hirsch Institute in 1912.
