Pierre Elliott Trudeau's rapid rise to power as Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada is the subject of this documentary program. The events leading up to Trudeau's election as party leader in 1968 are reviewed in voice-over commentary and archival footage of Lester B. Pearson announcing his retirement to the press and arriving at Government House to relinquish power. This is sharply contrasted with shots (accompanied by jazz music) of Trudeau on the street wearing a black leather jacket; waving to a crowd as he enters the House of Commons; and at a pre-election luncheon, quoting French writer George Buffon, who claims "Le Style, c'est l'homme même". Other pre-election footage includes: Senator John Nichol, Liberal Federation President, announcing the 1968 Liberal leadership with shots of Lloyd Henderson, Eric Kierans, Paul Hellyer, Allan MacEachen, Paul Martin, John Turner and Mitchell Sharp as candidates for party leadership; Robert Winters withdrawing from the race; Liberal regional conferences; Jean Marchand informing the press he is not a candidate; and Trudeau, then Minister of Justice, arguing at a federal-provincial conference on the constitution. Extensive footage of convention week in Ottawa in April 1968 includes shots of: mini-skirted supporters and other campaign activities; candidates arriving in Ottawa; the pandemonium created by Trudeau's arrival; candidates' assistants working out campaign strategy; Trudeau exchanging remarks with reporters; and of proceedings at the convention. Noteworthy shots also include: Joey Smallwood publicly supporting Trudeau; Jean Chrétien and Marc Lalonde at the leadership convention; and the announcement of Trudeau as the new Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. <60mn>
