Film compiling early cinema footage of British royalty and scenes of British life. The film begins with some of the earliest films made in Britain: Professor Terewey performing the hat trick; "rush hour" traffic on London Bridge; the fire brigade in action; crowds at Henley Regatta in 1897; a train coming into a station; a "phantom ride" on a train through a tunnel; changing of the guards in 1896; Persimmon winning the Derby in 1896. The first Empire Pageant to be filmed was Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee on 22 June 1897; a large parade with many carriages including the royal coach is shown. Other sporting activities shown include cyclists at the Woodford Meet, and a team of girls performing a bicycle drill at Catford in 1899. Other footage shown includes a Sunday afternoon on the River Thames; the Paris Exhibition of 1899; trawlers fishing in the North Sea in 1899; troops embarking for the South African war; the City Imperial Volunteers celebrating their victory in South Africa; Lork Kitchener inspecting his troops; Joseph Chamberlain on his way to sign the peace treaty in South Africa. Many events concerning the British royalty are shown: Queen Victoria's funeral procession in 1901; the Coronation of King Edward VII, complete with processions and city preparations; the King of Spain and the Kaiser arriving in England; King Edward VII and Queen Alexandria in Delhi, Dublin and Rome; President Loubet of France visiting England. King Edward's death in 1910 is commemorated in the state funeral procession. The Coronation of King George V is shown, as are many views of the King making state visits, accompanied by Queen Mary. Scenes of the Duke of York's wedding of Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon at Westminster Abbey are also shown. <46mn>
