This is the fourth and final program in a series on Canadian film. It reviews the history of film in Canada, beginning with news items from 1897, through documentaries and short films from the turn of the century to the 1920s, excerpts from the first feature films, to the present. Commentary is interspersed with clips of early features, newsreel footage, and non-fiction shorts. Host John Gould comments on: the emphasis on educational, informational or what is termed persuasive film in Canada; the quality of realism in Canadian features; the effect of the arrival of sound; the development of the mutoscope and the motion picture; Hollywood's exploitation of Canadian subjects; the influence of the National Film Board (NFB); sponsored film; and the effect of World War II on Canadian filmmaking. Excerpts of early feature films involving Canada in some aspect include: "The Viking" (George Melford, 1930); "The Sky Pilot" (King Vidor, 1921); "Anne of Green Gables" (George Nicholls Jr., 1934); and the all-Canadian production, "Carry on Sergeant" (Bruce Bairnsfather, 1928). A clip from "An Execution by Hanging" (Mutoscope & Biograph Co., Toronto, 1905) is an example of early 'news' reports and the mutoscope process. Canadian footage used in newsfilms includes: Governor-General Lord Connaught leaving Rideau Hall in a horse-drawn carriage and the Great Toronto Fire of 1904. Events shots for American productions like Movietone News (Fox) include: the 1924 oil rush in Alberta and a log drive on the Ottawa River, later used as a setting for the Canadian feature "The Man From Glengarry" (1922). Excerpts from Gordon Sparling's "Canadian Cameo" series (1932-1955) include: "Grey Owl's Little Brother" (1932) and "Rhapsody in Two Languages" (1933). There are clips of "The Viking" made in 1931 (and thought to be first sound-on-film production in Canada), the most expensive feature film of its time, "Carry On Sergeant", and an Edison one-reel film made in 1904 called ¨Crossing the Border¨. A clip from J.B. Scott's "Heritage" (1939) marks the end of the pre-war era and the absorption of the Canadian Government Motion Picture Bureau in 1941 by the NFB, described in an excerpt from the Board's 1939 documentary, "Self Portrait". ~The internationally-shown series "The World in Action" (1942-45) is illustrated with a clip from "The War for Men's Minds" (Stuart Legg; John Grierson, 1943). Excerpts from other informational and propaganda shorts include: "The Train-Busters" (Sydney Newman; Guy Glover, 1943); "V for Victory" (Norman McLaren, 1942); and "Proudest Girl in the World" (Julian Roffman, 1944). In voice-over comments accompanying clips from the German film "Triumph of the Will" (Leni Riefenstahl, 1937), John Grierson describes his use of this footage in counter-propaganda films. A documentary team headed by Roman Kroitor is shown preparing "Labyrinth", an Expo'67 project intended as a portrayal of the various stages and conflicts within human life. <60mn>
