First of a three-part television series on the emergence of modern man and its moral implications. Alan Jarvis, director of the National Gallery of Canada, describes the outlook of the medieval man whose body and mind were cramped in a society contained by fears of the natural world, and how he broke out of these confines which gave way to a new curiosity about nature and the beginnings of the Renaissance period. Jarvis examines some of the accomplishments of Leonardo da Vinci, as a scientist, inventor, philosopher, and artist, as well as those of Michelangelo, two of the Renaissance's overtowering figures. <30mn>
