This is part of a speech by Neville Chamberlain to the Foreign Press Association at its Golden Jubilee, Grosvenor House, London. Chamberlain discusses & defends his appeasement policies. As the broadcast begins a commentator describes the scene while faintly in the background is heard the President of the Foreign Press Association proposing a toast to Chamberlain. The broadcast later cuts to the conclusion of the President's toast. He expresses the gratitude of the press that British society has provided a bastion of peace, freedom & free speech. Chamberlain after a few laudatory & some facetious references to the press says he has nothing new or startling to say. He is still trying to keep the peace. He allows there are two points of view: war with the dictatorships is inevitable; or peace is possible if the causes of war are removed. He follows his own lights & if he is wrong there will be little consolation for him or for anyone else to say he followed the advice of others. The search for peace is crucial because war has changed drastically: it is not the professional fighters who suffer but general populaces. Chamberlain elaborates and discusses set-backs but lists the accomplishments of his policy: the agreement between the United Kingdom & Eire; Anglo-Italian Agreement; Munich Agreement; Anglo-German declaration; Franco-German declaration; & the Anglo-American Trade Agreement. He defends the Munich Agreement against the charge of a "defeat". He laments the vituperative attitude of the German press & talks of the visit of Lord Halifax & himself to Rome to work to prevent war. Chamberlain argues that he is not much concerned with different systems of government; & that because he negotiates with Nazis & Fascists he is not therefore in favour of that kind of government. He discusses British plans (in progress) to repair defences. The next portion of his speech is missing.~In Conclusion,Chamberlain re-asserts his belief that peace is possible. <40mn>
