The photographs in the Joseph Grasset Fonds depict the experiences of trappers and employees of the trading posts that opened in northern Quebec during the first half of the 20th century, especially in the 1920s.

As an employee of Revillon Frères, Joseph Grasset worked at various trading posts in Canada, mostly in northern Quebec, from 1907 to 1932, including Kangiqsujuaq (formerly Wakeham Bay) and Kangirsuk (formerly Payne Bay). His archives contribute to the documentation of the region, while telling the history of the French company's presence in Canada.

The photos were taken in the Hudson Strait region, most likely in the 1920s. The images show landscapes, animals and modes of transport such as boats, canoes, kayaks, planes and umiaks. There are also photos of the Great Whale River, Hudson Bay and Ungava, as well as portraits of unidentified Indigenous people, probably Inuit from the Nord-du-Québec region. Some images show families and children outside their summer tents; the construction of a kayak; a fisherman with his fishgig, among other things.

Grasset, Joseph, 1885?-1949 : Joseph Grasset was born in France around 1885. On February 21, 1907, he arrived in Canada on a ship from Le Havre, France, and settled in Roberval, a city in the province of Quebec. Grasset worked in the fur trade. In 1908, he was hired by the Revillon Frères company in Fort Albany, then worked in the trading posts of Kangiqsujuaq (formerly Wakeham Bay) and Kangirsuk (formerly Payne Bay). Revillon Frères was a French fur company that, from 1893 to 1936, set up trading posts throughout Northern Canada and competed with the Hudson's Bay Company. Grasset died in Montréal in 1949.

Historique de la conservation :

This fonds was transferred to the National Archives of Canada in 1986 from its Paris office. Raymonde Litalien directed the National Archives of Canada's research program in France (1977-2005), which led to the digitization of thousands of French documents relating to Canada. The objective of this program was to return to Canada copies of essential documents that bore witness to decisive events in the country's history. The location of the originals and the name of the photographer are unknown.
