Aside from a two-year stint in Hollywood as a blacksmith for Errol Flynn-style pirate movies, Buck Taylor had worked in Vancouver show business for 68 years, by the time of this interview with Grace Lydiatt Shaw. He gives a detailed description of the theatre he has witnessed. Starting with memories of the first performance ever in the Vancouver Opera house, Taylor describes the days of the Klondike gold rush, the 1890s Road Shows, the turn of the century Vaudeville and Burlesque, Prohibition and the stock companies. The actors, managers, stage-hands, stage devices, acts, theatres, social customs, transportation, style of dress and leisure habits are described. Locations within Vancouver for the now non-existent theatres are given. The number of shows per day, tickets and class of audience is described. The formation of IATE, an early stage-hands union is also discussed. Personalities from Sarah Bernhardt to the Barrymores are remembered.
