Series consists of five separate card indexes which provide name and subject access to parts of the Sir A.E. Kemp fonds. It is important to note that these indexes are not item level entries for all correspondents, but instead provide access to correspondence in which a particular name (or subject) is mentioned. File references in the index cards are generally accurate, but because these are original indexes, a few references are no longer correct.
Card Index IA (volumes 197 to 199) indexes the Minister without portfolio series, including both correspondence and the subject files sub-series (volumes 1 to 51). Note that the files in the subject files sub-series are referred to as "envelopes" on the index cards. This index is an alphabetical listing by name or subject identifying the name, address and file number(s) where correspondence is located. A brief indication of the subject matter may also be given.
Index IIA (volumes 200 to 201) indexes the General Correspondence series (volumes 52 to 76). It is an alphabetical index of both names and subjects, listing file number(s) where related correspondence can be located and a brief indication of subject content.
Index IIIA (volumes 202-203) indexes the correspondence portion of the War Purchasing Commission series (volumes 77-95). It is an alphabetical index of both names and subjects, listing the file number(s) where correspondence can be located and a brief indication of subject content. It provides a good overview of companies and industries involved in the war effort.
Index VA (volume 203) indexes volumes 110-114 of the Acting Minister of Militia and Defence series. This small index provides primarily name access to the files in the series.
Index VIIA (volumes 204-206) indexes the subject files of the Minister of Overseas Military Forces series (volumes 128-165). It is an alphabetical index of both names and subjects, list file number(s) where correspondence is located and a brief indication of the subject content. This index is handwritten.
