This is a set of draft newspaper columns by the writer Dorothy Barker about travelling on Canadian National Railways across Canada. Barker, born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1921 and raised in Calgary was the daughter of political newspaper cartoonist (father) and sculptor (mother). She worked for the Globe and Mail, and then after stints at two other smaller newspapers, became the managing editor of the Aurora Banner newspaper during the 1950s.

In 1959-1960 she was hired by Canadian National Public Relations department to write "Diary of a Vagabond", a lighthearted look at Canadian while on board the railways. Included with the various articles are surveys by CN to see what people thought of them, as well as photos and other printing material related to the column. This column was published on a regular basis from 1959 to ca. 1968.
