This sub-series consists of textual, graphic and photographic records that were retained by Lorne Perry, the former Supervisor of CN's Visual Redesign Program and later the Manager of the Corporate Identification Program.
The visual redesign centred initially around the creation of a new logo for Canadian National Railways. This new logo, known later as the wet noodle, was developed between 1959 and 1961, and unveiled in 1961.
In volume 16632 there are background reports about the program as well as proofs for various stationary, tickets, passes, and other corporate material.
Other subjects covered include: design and application of the new CN, CV (Central Vermont) and GT (Grand Trunk) corporate symbols, revised equipment colour schemes, visual resdesign studies for CN Ferry Terminals and CN Autobus Service Newfoundland and design and use of the CN Hotels' Red Key Symbol.
Other miscellaneous records include speakers' papers for the 1960 Rail International Design Environment (RIDE) Conference, a promotional brochure (1966) and inaugural week voided ticket for CN's Turbo train and promotional material for the 1974 CN-sponsored 6060 Steam Locomotive Excursions.
In volume 16633, there are photographs showing the use of the corporate logo on a variety of rolling stock, uniforms, and buildings (1960s-1970s).
Volumes 16888-16891 contain materials relating to the establishment and operation of the CN visual redesign program in the late 1950s through to the 1970s. There are records relating to the search for graphic designers to help with the task of the redesign, correspondence with the James Valkus firm that was ultimately hired, correspondence with James Valkus and Allan Fleming; correspondence and memos related to the redesign with various CN departments; paint samples and examples of what the new CN logo looked like on various different types of CN rolling stock, structures, and products, all from the late 1950s to the early 1960s.
Also included are extensive correspondence, contracts, and time sheets and financial reports from James Valkus relating to services rendered 1959 to early 1968. Additionally, interfiled there are photographs, business cards, letterheads and publications.
Also included are correspondence, contracts, and time sheets and financial reports from the graphic design firm that took over rending design services for CN in 1968, ARC Corporation International. There are design suggestions and related artwork for the Turbo Train, the CN Tower, and for employee uniforms, and the date range is roughly 1968-1975,
