Szabo, Paul, 1948- : Paul John Mark Szabo naît à Toronto, en Ontario, le 10 mai 1948. Il reçoit un baccalauréat en sciences de l'Université Western Ontario en 1970 et une maîtrise en administration des affaires de l'Université York en 1975. Entre 1975 et 1993, il occupe des postes de contrôleur corporatif chez Heede International Ltd. (1975-1976), de directeur chez TransCanada Pipeline Ltd. (1977-1983) et de trésorier à la United Cooperative of Ontario (1984-1990), avant de diriger son propre cabinet comptable privé (1990-1993).
Le 25 octobre 1993, Paul Szabo est élu député dans la circonscription de Mississauga-Sud. Il conservera son siège jusqu'aux élections fédérales du 2 mai 2011. Pendant sa carrière de député, il agit comme secrétaire parlementaire du ministre des Travaux publics et des Services gouvernementaux de 2000 à 2003 et préside le Groupe d'amitié parlementaire Canada-Taiwan pendant quatre ans, de 1997 à 2000. Il est aussi membre ou président de nombreux comités et sous-comités parlementaires. Ses fonctions de président du Comité permanent de l'accès à l'information, de la protection des renseignements personnels et de l'éthique de la Chambre des Communes (2007-2010), communément appelé « comité de l'éthique », le propulsent sur le devant de la scène. En effet, en 2007 et 2008, le Comité se penche sur les transactions financières et les relations d'affaires entre l'ancien premier ministre Brian Mulroney et le Germano-Canadien Karlheinz Schreiber (« l'affaire Airbus »).
Paul Szabo reçoit plusieurs prix au cours de sa carrière. En 2004, il est le lauréat du prix Joseph-P.-Borowski pour sa lutte contre l'avortement. Le 21 novembre 2006, il est nommé le député qui travaille le plus fort lors de la première remise des prix des parlementaires de l'année, décernés par Maclean's, L'actualité et l'Institut du Dominion. Il récidive pour la deuxième année consécutive un an plus tard, jour pour jour. Le 14 mai 2009, il remporte la palme une troisième fois de suite (aucun prix n'étant remis en 2008 à cause de l'élection fédérale) à l'occasion d'une cérémonie sur la Colline du Parlement.
En juillet 2009, Paul Szabo est élu fellow de l'Institut des comptables agréés de l'Ontario pour souligner sa carrière remarquable et son rôle prépondérant au sein de la communauté. Il s'agit du plus grand honneur que peut recevoir un comptable agréé. Le 6 décembre 2011, il reçoit le titre de Paul Harris Fellow du Rotary International en reconnaissance de sa longue carrière au service de la société et sa contribution de longue date au travail du Rotary.
Membre du Parti libéral du Canada, Paul Szabo adopte cependant des points de vue conservateurs sur les enjeux de société. Par exemple, il est pro-vie et s'oppose au mariage entre personnes du même sexe. En plus d'avoir écrit de nombreux rapports pour des comités de la Chambre des communes, il est l'auteur de six monographies sur les valeurs familiales traditionnelles, notamment sur les questions éthiques liées à l'utilisation de cellules souches et à la recherche dans ce domaine (voir la section « documents connexes »).
Le 2 mai 2011, après sept mandats consécutifs dans la circonscription fédérale de Mississauga-Sud, Paul Szabo est défait par la candidate conservatrice Stella Ambler. Le Parti libéral du Canada essuie un important revers au cours de cette élection, étant relégué au rang de troisième partie à la Chambre des communes pour la première fois de son histoire. Jamais il n'avait remporté aussi peu de sièges.
