Canada. Truth and Reconciliation Commission : The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) was created through a legal settlement - the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement (IRSSA) - between Indian Residential School survivors, the Assembly of First Nations, Inuit groups and the federal government of Canada and church administrations, who were responsible for the creation and operation of the schools. The TRC officially performed its mandate between 2008 and 2015.

The TRC's mandate was to educate Canadians about the experiences of Indian Residential School survivors, families, and communities. To do this the TRC held national events across Canada providing individuals with the opportunity to share their stories in front of honorary witnesses. The TRC provided a final report including 94 calls to action that "aimed at redressing the legacy of residential schools and advancing the process of reconciliation in Canada."

The TRC was comprised of three commissioners: Justice Murray Sinclair, the Chief Commissioner; Wilton Littlechild, and Marie Wilson. The commission also included: the Indian Residential School Survivor Committee (IRSSC); the Inuit Sub-Commission, which carried out its work in Northern Canada; and a Secretariat which oversaw research, event organization, statement taking, obtaining documents, information management of the Commission's documents, production of the report, ensuring the preservation of its records, and evaluating the Commemoration Policy Directive proposals.

In 2015, the TRC concluded its mandate and transferred its records to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.

Historique de la conservation :

The records of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) were sent to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) in Winnipeg in the Fall of 2015. Then, the majority of administrative and operational records of the TRC were transferred from the NCTR to LAC in Feb. 2016, and a smaller group of records was transferred to LAC in Oct. 2017.

Please note that the arrangement structure of this fonds is largely artificial. As the information on the context of creation of the records of the TRC that was provided to LAC at the time of transfer was very limited, the comprehension of the context of creation of the records is mainly based on the file titles, file numbers when available, and on the contents of the records.
