File consists of an interview with John Borrows titled "The profound lessons of Indigenous law." The interview was conducted by Silver Donald Cameron as part of The Green Interview. File includes video of the interview, printed transcript, sound recording, and closed captioning file.

From the interview with John Borrows: "You know, all legal traditions are generated by people's interactions and then discussions and deliberations around those interactions. They might often have a higher level that they're recognized at through statute or in courts, but if they're not connected to some organic, living system of decision-making, regulation, they're not really guiding their lives. They're not really criteria, precedent, authoritative in the way that people want to pursue their ways of being. [...]

"Yeah, it's where you look for your authority that makes a big difference in terms of what you regard as being directive or guiding in your life. So, if you see the Crown as the source of all information - as the source of all authority - you have a view about what the decision-making criteria would be, what the responsibilities might be around regulation. But, if you see the Creator, or the trees, or the waters, or the animals, or people's own living interactions as being the source of authority - the criteria, the precedent - then you would obviously have another view of where you should look to find law.

"In Anishinaabe, there's a different set of terms for thinking about law. One is called Inaakinogewin, which means "the great guided ways of decision-making." But another is kinwezhiwewin - I think you might be talking to Basil Johnston later - and this word, kinwezhiwewin, means "to take guidance from the criteria that you find around you." And so, Anishinaabe people themselves have ideas about law that are more organic, that are more embedded in interactions and relationships."

John Borrows is one of Canada's most prolific and celebrated legal scholars and a professor of law at the University of Minnesota. He has written and spoken widely on aboriginal legal rights and traditions, treaties and land claims, and religion and the law. He's also Anishinaabe, a member of the Neyaashiinigmiing community, the Cape Croker First Nation on Bruce Peninsula in North-Western Ontario. Well steeped in both traditions of law, Borrows is uniquely positioned to reflect on the essential nature of law itself.
