This silent film describes the workings of the nickel refinery at Clydach, Wales belonging to The Mond Nickel Company, Limited, a subsidiary of the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited. The Mond Process of nickel refining is detailed in intertitles and illustrated with actuality footage: nickel sulphide arrives in barrels from Canada at Swansea Dock and is transported to Clydach where it is unpacked and raised by elevator from bunkers to the mill; it is ground and passed to the "cyclone" where it is separated into coarse and fine streams, the coarse matte being sent back for grinding; the fine matte going to producer gas-fired calciners where the sulphur is burnt off, then to convertors, reducers, and the volatilization stage where carbon monoxide joins with the nickel in the matte to form nickel carbonyl, re-separated in a decomposer where the nickel adheres to passing nickel pellets collected at the base of the machine. The film also details methods of nickel recovery from waste at each stage of the process, and includes a sequence on the plant's medical centre, company housing and recreation, and sites of interest: the Mond Company guesthouse; Coniston House; Frood House; and a statue of Dr. Ludwig Mond. <16mn>
