4 plaques : metal.Langue du document :anglaisPortée et contenu :Fonds consists primarily of records demonstrating Mr. Ngi Yong Lim's contribution to the development of Stelco's milestone project Lake Erie Works, and the modernization of the Hilton Works. There are technical and architectural drawings, notes and calculations for various projects (both originals and copies), copies of research and reports, meeting minutes, reference materials used for various projects (some with annotations), letters of thanks, commemorative letters, certificates, metal plaques, photographs, and objects.
Also included are personal documents: correspondence with professional associations, business cards, ID pass at Stelco, university transcript and certification of good standing, CV, information on Stelco employee benefits, and other letters of correspondence to and from Mr. Lim.Provenance :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Lim, Ngi Yong, 1925-2002 : Born in 1925, Ngi Yong Lim was originally from Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. He left in the late 1950s to study architectural (now civil) engineering at Washington State University, USA. After graduating in 1956, Yong worked briefly in Chicago, and then took a position as principal engineer at the firm Woodham Duckett in London, England. Here, he met and married Eli Alice Wilhelmsen (originally from Norway) in 1959 and they had four children.
In 1963, Mr. Lim and his family immigrated to Canada, where he accepted a position as civil engineer at H.G. Acres in Niagara Falls, Ontario. In 1966, Yong was offered a position as a civil engineer at the Steel Company of Canada (Stelco) in Hamilton, Ontario. He worked at Stelco for 21 years, notably in the Major Projects group, until his retirement in 1987. Subsequently, he worked on the detailing of concrete and steel structures, both as a consulting engineer from 1987 to 1989 and at Hoogovens Technical Services until 1992. Mr. Lim died on August 15th, 2002, in Burlington, Ontario.
Projects:
At H.G. Acres, he worked on such projects as the Churchill Falls Generating Station in Labrador and the Welland Canal. At Stelco, he worked on design and detailing for the foundations and concrete structures of the landmark Lake Erie Works in Nanticoke, which has produced materials for major North American manufacturing companies. He was also involved in preparing preliminary layouts and cost estimates for various modernization projects at the Hilton Works in Hamilton.Information additionnelle :Historique de la conservation :Documents kept by Mr. Lim to showcase his professional portfolio.
