Akulukjuk, Malaya, 1915-1995 : Inuit artist Malaya Akulukjuk was born in Qikiqtat Camp, Nunavut in 1915, and lived a traditional life on the land before setting in Pangnirtung, Northwest Territories in 1962. Malaya learned to carve in Pangnirtung, and created sculptures in stone, antler and whalebone, but she is best-known for her drawings, which depicted traditional stories, camp scenes, animals, birds, and anthropomorphic spirit figures (for example, bird-woman and the Inuit sea goddess Sedna), and landscapes. Many of her drawings were used as the inspiration for tapestries and prints. The first prints of her drawings were made in 1975, and she participated in many annual exhibitions of Inuit prints throughout her life. The first tapestries based on her drawings were woven in the Pangnirtung Tapestry Studio in 1971 (one of the tapestries created from her works won a design award in 1974). Her works have been shown in Canada, Jerusalem and the United States, including a solo exhibition at the Mount Royal Arts Centre in Montreal in 1979 (where the drawings on offer were exhibited). In 1990, she was commissioned by Dow Chemical Canada to create a set of prints. In 1995, a series of tapestries based on her last drawings were woven by the Pangnirtung Tapestry Studio to honour her lifetime of artistic achievement.

In addition to being an artist Malaya was the mother of thirteen children. Her late husband, Nutaralaq Akulukjuk, was a sculptor, and six of her children are also artists (sons Jeetaloo, Geeshee, Juelee, Enukee and Moar, and daughter, May Lonsdale). Malaya died in Pangnirtung, Iqualuit in 1995. She was accorded the title of shaman. Her work has inspired a whole generation of Pangnirtung artists.
