File consists of a leather bound album in two parts containing photographs taken on A.R.C. Selwyn's 1871 and 1875 expeditions of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) to British Columbia. On the 1871 expedition Benjamin Baltzly was the main photographer, and photographs include prints from his own negatives numbered 1 to 33. These images depcit landscape views and surveying activities of central British Columbia, Victoria, and the British Columbia Interior along the Thompson River. Baltzly was paid for in part by William Notman and in part by Stanford Flemming and the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), and he was assisted by Mr. Hammond. In 1875 Selwyn was the main photographer, and his photographs include prints from GSC negatives 96 to 131. These photographs depict landscape views of central to northeast British Columbia, including: Quesnel, Fort St. James, McLeod Lake, Peace River, and Table Mountain. This expedition was made in conjunction with the CPR, looking for a northern railway route via the Peace River district. Selwyn's assistants included J. Richardson in 1871, and J.M. Macoun and Mr. Webster in 1875.
