The fonds contains 53 col. slides (35 mm) taken by George Rauliuk while posted with his family in Fort Chipewyan, northern Alberta, from 1954 to 1958, as an active member of the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. The images depict the community, the annual treaty money disbursement, tea dances, religious ceremonies at the Holy Angels Residential School, airplanes and tugboats used for the transportation of semi-annual supplies, the Army Signals Telegraph Station, the Army PMQ, among others.

Rauliuk, George, 1917-1996 : George Rauliuk was born on December 20, 1917, on a farm east of Edmonton, Alberta. He joined the Canadian Army during World War II as a Morse Code Operator with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals and spent much of the war in Ottawa. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he was assigned to a special group sent on motorcycles to master mountain climbing in the Rockies, in anticipation of a possible Japanese attack on the West Coast. He was also part of the team that opened up the radio (Morse code) station on Long Beach, on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

In Ottawa, George met his future wife, PEI born Iris Brown, who was also in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. They married in 1947 and were posted to Fort Smith, NWT, where the family grew to include three daughters. In 1954, the family was posted to the radio station in Fort Chipewyan, on the western tip of Lake Athabasca in northern Alberta.

In Fort Chip, the only commercial establishments were the Hudson's Bay Company, Alec Grey's General Store and Charlie Mah's Chinese Restaurant. Baking bread at home was a regular activity, and groceries arrived twice a year by supply boat. George and Iris's daughters attended the Holy Angels Residential School, a Catholic residential school run by the Grey Nuns, as day students and the family attended the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Roman Catholic Church next door.

After four years, the family was posted to Calgary, and later on to Winnipeg. In 1960, George was sent to the Belgian Congo with the UN Peacekeeping Force. There, he was captured along with others and temporarily imprisoned by rebel troops.

Further postings sent the family to Halifax and to Kingston, where George retired in 1972 with his family of now six children. After retiring from the army, he joined Parks Canada in the Personnel Department and was posted to Cornwall, Calgary, and then back to Cornwall, to facilitate his second retirement, in Kingston in 1983. George Rauliuk died in Kingston in July 1996.
