Would you be ready to have your kitchen examined by a health inspector? Why not be your own health inspector and check out your kitchen for food storage safety? First, check whether there's any food stored in cabinets through which water pipes, drain pipes or heating-pipes pass. Foods stored in these cabinets will attract insects, and possibly rodents, through openings that can't be sealed. Leakage from pipes can also damage food products. Do you store food products and household chemicals in the same cabinet? That's a definite no - no, since a container of cleaning chemical may easily be mistaken for a food product. Are there foods kept in cabinets above the stove? The heat from the range will shorten the storage life of food items kept in these cupboards. Look at your kitchen counter. Is there any food sitting out? Be sure to keep all foods that need to be refrigerated or frozen at their proper temperatures. Improper storage of such foods will result in rapid bacterial growth. Before putting away any foods, read the labels to see which storage method is recommended. Now on to the toughest part of your inspection - the refrigerator. How long have you been saving foods in the refrigerator? Refrigeration will prolong the storage of foods by retarding the growth of bacteria. But neither refrigeration nor freezing will keep food indefinitely! A temperature of 45 F in your refrigerator will hold most food 3 or 4 days only. Purchase a refrigerator thermometer and you'll discover how long you should refrigerate your foods. Have you made the grade? Proper food storage is essential, not only to ensure the product's safety but also its quality. With the cost of food these days, proper food storage really pays off. <1mn 45s>
