Now that the Christmas season is over many of us are concerned about a few newly gained pounds. As we all know when the diet supplies more calories than the body requires a gain in weight will result, and when the diet supplies fewer calories than needed, a loss in weight will result. When trying to lose weight it is still very important to maintain a balanced diet in order to stay healthy. Crash diets are hard on your body, are difficult to maintain over a long period and then after losing excess pounds, it is difficult to keep them from creeping on again. Before making any drastic change in your diet be sure to consult your physician. To maintain a balanced diet, and lose weight be sure to select foods from each of the five groups in Canada's Food Guide: milk, fruits, vegetables, breads and cereals, and meats and fish. However choose lean meats and fish, use skim milk or buttermilk instead of whole milk, eat fresh fruits for dessert instead of cake or pastries, and pass up second helpings. Foods to avoid include sweet condiments such as jams or syrups, bread alternates such as pancakes or donuts, fried foods, gravies, and rich cream dishes. If you are hungry between meals, snack on fruits and vegetables such as apples, or carrots and celery sticks. With these slight modifications in your diet you should lose those extra pounds at a healthy rate. <1mn 29s>
