If you've been considering the purchase of a microwave oven here are a few pointers that will help you make your choice. First take a look at the different models available. Microwave ovens are available as portables for use on the average kitchen counter top, they are available as built-in ovens or they can be purchased as a free standing oven range which has two ovens one for microwave cooking and one for conventional cooking. The cost of these models does vary considerably. So be sure to consider the different models, their cost and the extra features they contain. Remember that a microwave oven will not completely replace a conventional oven. Cooking times will be reduced for some foods, but not all, as time depends upon the temperature, density and volume of the product. Since microwaves cook foods from the outside edges first^ you will still have to stay close to the oven to stir and turn food. Check the size of microwave oven, compare the dimensions of both the oven cavity and the exterior. The standard portable microwave oven measures 18 - 19 inches deep, 22 - 24 inches wide and 16 inches high and will hold a 10 pound roast. Safety is an important feature to consider in purchasing a microwave oven. Be sure the oven meets the Federal Government Safety Standards for microwave ovens. The oven must be equipped with a safety lock which automatically shuts off the oven when the door is opened. Take a look at the timer on the microwave oven. Are there one, two or more timers? And are the timers set by minute, seconds or both. Microwave cooking in some cases is done in seconds. There are a few extra features which you may wish to check. For example is the browning unit included? Or available for purchase? Without a browning unit many foods we normally expect to see golden brown color when cooked will instead be very pale. This applies for example to roasting a chicken or baking a pie. Also check the ease of cleaning of the oven. In a microwave oven it's important to wipe the oven clean with a damp cloth after each use so that drippings do not interfere with the safety seal around the door. The microwave oven will be a compliment to your conventional oven. It's a once in a lifetime purchase that you'll want to make with care. <2mn 57s>
