Next time you're in a supermarket take a look at the labels on the food you buy. In the next few years you are going to see some significant changes, as foods will come under a nutritional labelling program. Nutritional labelling means that the label on the foods will contain information about the nutritional content of the food. This will be the nutrients that the food contains naturally or it will also indicate a food which has nutrients added to it. Now, how is this going to help you when you are doing your shopping? Well, for one thing it will help when making a direct comparison between two similar foods. For example, does one tomato juice contain more vitamin A or more vitamin C than another? If so it may be a better buy. On the other hand you may discover that a well known brand contains exactly the same amount of a certain nutrient as a less expensive brand. In this case the less expensive brand may be the better buy. Nutritional labelling can help you make sure that your family's diet includes all the nutrients that they need. Suppose your family's diet is short on vitamin A. One could then check a can of green peas, spinach or yellow beans and decide which is the best buy and fits best with the daily food plan. Nutritional labelling will also be a quick lesson in nutrition. One will discover that vitamins A and C come from vegetables and fruits; riboflavin, thiamine and niacin (the B vitamins) from cereals and breads; calcium and protein from dairy products and iron and protein from meats. <1mn 45s>
