Metric measures will soon be with us in Canada, but don't panic! Metric measures will really mean a simplified way of dealing with weights and measures that we use in every day life. The metric measurements that we will see most often are kilograms and grams, liters and milliliters, meters and centimeters and degrees Celsius. Let's take a look at metric measures for the kitchen. Don't start throwing out all your measuring cups, measuring spoons and baking pans, you'll still be able to use them. With these items the choice will be left up to the individual as to what he or she wishes to use. However, what it will mean in one case is that the measure in which you purchase the food will be different. For example, when you go to buy sugar, rather than buying a 5 pound bag of sugar you will purchase probably a 2 kilogram bag of sugar and instead of a 10 pound bag of flour, it will be sold as a 4 1/2 kilogram bag. A kilogram is also known popularly as a kilo. 1 kilo equal to 2.2 pounds. You'll find kilograms and grams will be used on many of the food items which you now purchase by the pound or ounces. In any case when you do get home you still can dip into the sugar bag with your measuring cup which means you won't have to discard your favorite recipes but you will see new recipes published with both cups or teaspoons and the metric measure equivalent in liters or milliliters. <1mn 37s>
