Audio recording of a radio interview on CKUA Radio's "First Voices" with Tomson Highway. Highway discusses the writing of his novel "Kiss Of The Fur Queen". At the start of the interview Highway explains certain details pertaining to Cree mythology and presents the setting of the chapter he will read an excerpt from. Highway then reads an excerpt from his novel (The two brothers go to the Pow wow). Highway explains how he was introduced to the Pow wow (and recalls his childhood in Northern Manitoba, the heavy influence of the Catholic Church, and the impact of Residential schools) and his first reactions of shame; he also discusses the actual social problems affecting the Indigenous populations of Canada; he underlines the importance of traditional dance and ceremonies; the struggle to master of the English language and complete his studies; explains that in his twenties he felt the necessity to work in a Native Cultural Centre and to learn about Native history and ancestral rituals and beliefs; the impact of certain persons in Highway's life that have inspired him in the writing of his novel; he discusses the challenges of writing a novel in comparison to writing plays (especially the descriptive parts); the social challenges of Natives peoples today (social and education programs); Highway underlines his appreciation of the presence of Native and multicultural groups in the City of Toronto; his criticism of the Church and the fact that it has put itself above criticism; the place of Homosexuality in the Church as well woman's abuse in Native communities. Highway concludes that abuse has been committed by the Church (notably in Native communities) and that this situation needs to be confronted. <28 mn>
