CPAC's Martin Stringer moderates a round table discussion with experts in the field of health care, on the results of the eight annual Health Care in Canada Survey. Health care will be one of the top issues in the newly-announced federal election campaign. The members of the round table are: Michael Marzolini, Chairman of Pollara Research; Lynda Cranston, President of the Association of Canadian Academic Healthcare Organizations; Sharon Sholzberg Grey, President of the Canadian Healthcare Association; Dr. Elinor Wilson, CEO of the Canadian Public Health Association; Colin Leslie, News Editor for The Medical Post; Michael Villeneuve, Senior Nursing Policy Consultant for the Canadian Nurses Association; and Jeff Poston, Executive Director of the Canadian Pharmacists Association. Stringer begins the session by providing some history on conversations in politics surrounding the issue of healthcare. The Liberal Party has accused the Conservative Party of having a hidden agenda and wanting more privatization in the health care system; the NDP have said they haven't got enough assurances from the Liberals about cracking down on private healthcare; and the Supreme Court of Canada's decision in the Chaoulli case has affected public perception of public vs. private health care. Marzolini provides a brief overview of the results of the survey, which polled the public, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and health administrators. In general there has been a decline in confidence in the health care system, with excessive wait times remaining the biggest concern. Other points include a general approval of government initiatives to improve health and prevent illness and injury; concern that Canada is not ready to deal with something like a flu pandemic; support for innovation; and uncertainty in the debate regarding public vs. private health care. The presentation of the results is followed by reactions and questions from the participants, and then a discussion that covers topics including: the public's reaction to the Chaoulli case; private vs public funding of health care; excessive wait times and the need for serious reform in the health care system; questions the public should ask their candidates during the election campaign; and what health care topics have been over represented, under represented, or misrepresented by politicians and the media. <124mn>
