Inscribed beneath images: Cold-water thawing. These points are driven in and feed cold water to the frozen ground. They are about 8 feet apart. Men keep driving them down as they melt the ground. Man in picture is just about to raise 28-pound hammer, clamped around point. This is very hard work, especially as men work in cold water. After the ground is thawed it is hydraulicked and sluiced so that it can later be dredged.
