Coverage of the 138th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA), in Edmonton, Alberta. The theme of the 2005 General Council is “Healthy People, Healthy Future.” The coverage begins with presentations of the reports from the core Councils and Committees. The presenters are: Dr. Alecs Chochinov, Chair of the Education and Workforce Committee; Dr. Michael Cohen, Chair of the Health Care and Promotions Committee; Dr. Marshall Dahl, Chair of the Health Policy and Economics Committee; Dr. Daniel Wagner, Chair of the Political Action Committee; Dr. Eugene Bereza, Chair of the Ethics Committee; and Dr. Charmaine Roye, Chair of the Committee of National Medical Organizations. The presentations are followed by a trivia and stretch break, and then General Council continues to debate motions from strategic session 2, “Charting the Future: The Public Private Interface in Health Care.” Following voting on all strategic session motions, delegates' motions are moved, debated, and voted upon. After a motion to refer the remaining delegates' motions and strategic session motions to the Board of Directors is carried, a few final motions to express thanks are moved and carried by show of hands. Dr. Albert Schumacher, outgoing President of the CMA, thanks Dr. Marquis Fortin, outgoing Speaker of the General Council of the CMA, for his last four years of service. The 138th General Council of the Annual Meeting is adjourned, and the 138th Business Session of the Annual Meeting is opened. The changes and amendments to the bylaws as adopted by the 138th General Council are approved, by show of hands. The Business Session is adjourned, and Dr. Schumacher introduces the incoming President, Dr. Ruth Collins-Nakai. She thanks Dr. Schumacher, and encourages the members of the CMA to contact her with questions, ideas, and concerns. The coverage ends with a slideshow of moments from the General Council, particularly of set up and behind the scenes occurrences. <162mn>
