The Archimedean screw tractor or AST is a vessel that can operate in solid or broken ice in open water. It is supported and propelled by rotating helical screws located along its sides. The objective of this project is to evaluate the cost effectiveness of the AST as an ice management tool. In March 1982, an AST was used to prepare snow and ice surfaces near and around the Cargill Elevator loading ship in Thunder Bay so as to accelerate normal ice melt. Plots of ice, 50 m x 100 m, were prepared in various ways, e.g. snow cleared, surface roughened, trenched or dusted with albedo material to reduce ice reflectivity coefficient. Control plots were designated for comparative purposes. The AST was then used in the monitoring of the changing ice thicknesses and strength of each plot. During test period, the AST also served as a winter port service vessel in support of air cushion icebreaking tests at Thunder Bay. Its own capabilities as an icebreaker were also measured. Results of work will be used in support of continuing efforts to extend the shipping season on the Great Lakes.
