The high intensity plasma lamp seems capable of satisfying a marine requirement for a powerful, compact light source in a number of specialized applications such as icebreaking operations, search and rescue and night time clean-up of oil spills. An experimental plasma light source was developed by MPB Technologies Inc. using funds supplied by the Defence Research Board of the Department of National Defence. TDC has tested the experimental model aboard a ship. The light unit has an overall efficiency of 40 percent and is capable of providing approximately 60 kW of useful radiated power. The lamp head (including reflector) measures 50 cm wide x 40 cm high x 30 cm deep and weighs about 68 kg. The lamp head can be separated up to several hundred feet from the power supply and is suitable for mounting on the mast of the ship. This type of light source also has potential for application in other modes of transport and for commercial purposes such as stadium lighting. A second lamp model was developed and demonstrated aboard the Canadian Coast Guard's M.V. Normal McLeod Rodgers. Modifications to the original experimental design increased the efficiency of the unit, reduced the weight of the power supply and improved portability and reliability. The two field tests have been carried out. In a temporary installation aboard the M.V. Norman McLeod, the light was operated for approximately one hour at dockside. Later the light was demonstrated during icebreaking operations. Examination of the light after the demonstrations revealed contamination of the light head, apparently due to grease and dirt on the hose connections between the gas recirculating system and the light head. Further evaluations are in progress. <4mn>
