The purpose of this project is to develop an effective method for ships operating in ice-infested waters to detect and avoid ice hazards under all environmental conditions. Such technology is vital to the safe and efficient sea transport of oil and gas resources from northern Canada. At present, ships' operating in ice-infested waters rely basically on watch observers to detect ice hazards. This method of visual sighting is ineffective at night and in poor weather. Little I known about the capability and reliability of electronic sensors, such as radar, sonar, infra-red and low light level television, in detecting dangerous ice obstacles. Activities for this project include a theoretical evaluation of at least three sensors in the north Baffin Bay/Lancaster Sound are during the summer of 1980. Data have been collected on the performance of the selected sensors in detecting ice hazards ranging from growing growlers weighing 100 tonnes (about 5 meters square) to major icebergs of 100 million tonnes or more at various rangers and under all weather conditions. It is expected that the information on the performance of equipment of current design will provide a data base for the development of improved sensors. These sensors must then be integrated into an automatic, computer controlled, ice warning and collision avoidance system which would display ice hazard warning information on the bridge of the ship. Field tests of the selected units installed aboard the M.V. Polarhav have been completed. <19mn>
