Joan Voller participated in an oral history interview conducted by Lisa Bannister in 2000. The interview was used to create a first-person narrative for Bannister's published work "Equal to the Challenge: An Anthology of Women's Experiences during World War II." Voller was working as a clerk at the Dominion Bureau of Statistics when the war broke out. She worked to support the 1941 census for three years before beginning to feel she wanted to contribute more to the war effort. Decided to become a Wren. She was sent for basic training in Windsor, ON, where she discovered there were not many positions left so she opted to train as an Officer Steward (OS). She worked in the galley of HMCS Hunter until August 1944, then she was drafted to HMCS Conestoga for a month before being posted to HMCS Cornwallis. The Navy Show, a variety act with singing and dancing, kept those at Cornwallis entertained. Voller decided to audition and was accepted as a singer. Many people found careers in entertainment after the war because of The Navy Show. She also met her husband while in service and when he was drafted overseas, she asked to be drafted as well in order to be with him. She was discharged in March 1946 at HMCS Niobe in London, England. She and her husband returned to Ottawa in late 1947 and found a much more developed city. Voller developed discipline and respect through her time in the service.
