Harriet Sloan participated in an oral history interview conducted by Lisa Bannister in 2000. The interview was used to create a first-person narrative for Bannister's published work "Equal to the Challenge: An Anthology of Women's Experiences during World War II." Sloan was a student nurse at the Vancouver General Hospital when war broke out. In 1941 she applied to the three services as a military nurse and was accepted by the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. Her first posting was at the Regina Military Hospital where she had her first experience in improvisation during an outbreak of scarlet fever. Her second posting was at Dundrun Camp in Saskatoon when an accident hospitalized her and she did not return to the army for a full year. When she returned to service she was posted overseas to #8 Canadian General Hospital. This was one of the hospitals chosen to move to Normandy. Midnight on July 18, 1944, they set sail in a Landing Craft Tank and landed at Mulberry. They had to establish their own hospital there on the beach. The hospital stayed there until early September before moving into Europe, setting up temporary hospitals in Rouen, Antwerp, and Holland. She remembers the small cemeteries that would be left behind each time. Sloan decided to remain in the Medical Corps after the role that resulted in twenty-seven years of service in a variety of roles and deployment.
