Mary Saunders participated in an oral history interview conducted by Lisa Bannister. The interview was used to create a first-person narrative for Bannister's published work "Equal to the Challenge: An Anthology of Women's Experiences during World War II." Saunders was living at home in Toronto, waiting to start training to be a buyer at Eaton's, when the war broke out. When the Air Force opened up for women she applied in June 1941. Basic training was completed in Jarvis, ON, followed by a posting to Upland, ON, in January 1942. She trained to become a NCO and then attended the Officer's Course. She used the skills from her training to handle airwomen and train new recruits at the Manning School in Rockcliffe. Ended up going to overseas with the performance group The Blackouts as Junior Officer in charge of the show. This allowed her to travel to England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Belgium and France. She returned home November 1945. Time in the service made Saunders grow up and assume responsibility, increased her confidence in dealing with people, made her more careful about judging others, and value relationships with friends.
