Tish Hebert participated in an oral history interview conducted by Lisa Bannister. The interview was used to create a first-person narrative for Bannister's published work "Equal to the Challenge: An Anthology of Women's Experiences during World War II." Herbert enlisted with the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service in July 1943 as a Messenger. Basic training took place at HMCS Conestoga in September 1943 and was drafted to remain there after training. She did not act in a messenger role while there instead she was assigned to make signs, however, when she was drafted to HMCS Protector in Sydney, NS, she was sent to work as a Messenger out of the Communications Office. She was later drafted to HMCS Avalon in Newfoundland as a Wren Plotter in the Operations Plotting Room. The event that sticks out most happened in May 1944 when one of their ships was torpedoes and sank and survivors were brought back to St.John's. This was her first experience with death. A month later, D-Day, was another significant event for those in Plotting Operations. She was discharged in late 1945 and settled easily into civilian life. Herbert comments that service made her responsible, rewarded her with friendships, and changed the role of women in society.
