Jessie Currie participated in an oral history interview conducted by Lisa Bannister in 1999. The interview was used to create a first-person narrative for Bannister's published work "Equal to the Challenge: An Anthology of Women's Experiences during World War II." Currie was nineteen years old and living in Surrey, England when the war broke out. The war seemed to start off slowly and did not feel real until someone she knew was killed during a raid. Women began to be conscripted into roles as well, such as working in munitions or even bakeries. Originally she had thought of joining the Wrens but did not wish to leave her mother so she joined the Women's Voluntary Service and worked with the fire service. This role involved her taking messages from the coast alerting of enemy action and relaying the messages to the Air Raid Wardens. The German bombings stand out in her memories. She describes her experiences during bombings including during the Battle of Britain. After the war, women attempted to maintain the independence they had through employment during the war. Currie moved to Canada after the war and found that Canadians experienced less hardship at home during the war.
